The latest figures for Transition Management in France in the first half of 2023

The Interim Management market in France continues to shine in the first half of this year. The France Transition Barometer for the first half of 2023 reveals exceptional figures which demonstrate the vitality and growing relevance of this practice in a constantly evolving economic context.

 

Sustained growth of 34%

One of the salient points of this barometer is the sustained growth of Interim Management, with an increase in turnover of 34% compared to the first half of the previous year. This positive trend, which began in 2021, highlights the increased importance of Interim Management for companies in the transformation phase.

 

Quasi-stable daily pricing

Despite inflation of around 5%, the daily pricing level for Interim Management services remained almost constant during the first half of 2023. On average, missions are billed at 1,250 euros excluding VAT per day, all missions combined. This stability highlights the added value brought by experienced Interim Managers, who occupy strategic leadership positions within client organizations.

 

Growing relay management missions

Bridging management missions now represent 51% of the total activity of Interim Management. This type of mission, which aims to quickly replace managers or executives, has developed significantly over the last five years. This trend has also led to a slight decrease in the average duration of missions, which now stands at 7.09 months.

 

The functions sought

Financial Directors remain at the top of demands with growth of 3% during the first half of 2023 and almost 6% year-on-year. It should be noted a decline in industrial management missions (-3%) at the start of 2023, but a recovery in requests for General Directors (+3%) over one year.

 

Demanding sectors

After a period of stability in 2022, the industrial sector is progressing strongly in the first half of 2023, with an increase of 7%. It now represents 53% of transition missions. At the same time, distribution recorded a sharp decline (-6%) over the same period.

 

Interim Management clients

The Île-de-France region remains in the lead with 54% of missions, followed closely by Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (11%) and Hauts-de-France (6%). Three regions concentrate 70% of missions: Île-de-France, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, and Hauts-de-France.

Mid-Size Companies (ETI) are still the main providers of transition missions, returning to the same level as in the first half of 2022 after an increase of more than 10% in the second half of 2022. Large French groups have also increased their demand transition missions (+6%).

The acquisition rate of new clients for interim management remains stable, representing around a third of new clients.

 

Profile of Interim Managers

Interim Managers remain predominantly men (70%), although the share of women in this population has increased slightly (+2%).

The age group most represented among interim managers is 50 to 59 years old (54%). However, in the first half of 2023, we observe a significant drop in managers aged 50 to 59 (-5%), indicating a rejuvenation of the profession.

Managers from the Ile-de-France region represent 51% of the population, followed by Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (12%) and Hauts-de-France (7%). The distribution of geographical origins saw a slight decline compared to the previous year.

Usually, first-time buyers represent around a third of transition missions. However, due to the significant growth in missions in the first half of 2023, the profession has called on more first-time buyers.
